Definition and Meaning

The acronym 4 H refers to a charitable nonprofit organization that operates programs all over the world. The purpose of the 4-H is to help young people get involved in positive programs that motivate them to achieve and to avoid dangerous activities like drug abuse and becoming a part of gangs. Founded in 1902, the group is sponsored in the U.S. by the United States Department of Agriculture and largely focuses on programs related to agriculture.

In the United States, there are more than 6.5 million youths involved in 4 H with participants ranging in age from about 5 to 21. Programs are offered by local chapters of the 4 H, and there are more than 900,000 of the clubs located just in the U.S. Much of the work of the 4 H is done by volunteers with more than 611,000 people helping with various activities. More than 25 million people have been involved with 4 H programs since the founding of the group.

There are a wide variety of 4 H activities that take place around the world. Many programs encourage youth to work with livestock and crops, and there are conferences and competitions held for 4 H students throughout the year. Some programs take place after school, while others provide summer camps for kids of certain ages. Studies have found that children who participate in 4 H are twice as likely to make healthy choices for their bodies, to excel in science, engineering and technology and to be concerned about the well-being of their communities.
